Physical Education

The importance of Physical Education at Well Green Primary School

Physical education (PE) plays a crucial role at Well Green Primary School by promoting physical, mental, and social well-being amongst young children. It fosters healthy habits, teamwork, discipline, and resilience, while also contributing to the development of motor skills and coordination. Engaging in physical activity from an early age helps combat childhood obesity, reduces stress, and improves concentration in academic work.

Moreover, PE in primary schools supports emotional growth by teaching children how to manage success and failure, promoting social interactions, and encouraging teamwork. It also lays the foundation for an active lifestyle, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood.

A famous quote by the renowned athlete Michael Jordan highlights the power of sports in shaping individuals:
"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying."

This reflects the importance of perseverance and effort, values that are often instilled through physical education. Through PE, children not only improve their physical health but also learn critical life skills such as determination, teamwork, and resilience.

Intent:

Well Green Primary School recognises the value of Physical Education (P.E). We fully adhere to the aims of the national curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives

Implementation:

P.E. is taught at Well Green Primary School as an area of learning in its own right as well as integrated where possible with other curriculum areas, with the aim of minimising the amount of sedentary learning time for children. We teach 2 one-hour PE lessons each week, in the three key areas of team sports, gymnastics and dance.
We teach lessons so that children:

  • Have fun and experience success in sport
  • Have the opportunity to participate in P.E at their own level of development
  • Secure and build on a range of skills
  • Develop good sporting attitudes
  • Understanding basic rules
  • Experience positive competition
  • Learn in a safe environment
  • Have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.

Impact:

P.E is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. At Well Green, we provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as respect and cooperation.
